There's No Joy in Smileville...
The Smiley School Closes
The Smiley School in Haverhill, Massachusetts, is closing after the 2001-2002 school year. Built in 1914, the school was named for James V. Smiley, the third mayor of Haverhill. It serves Kindergarten through second grade. The school is closing as a city cost-saving measure.
Smiley School is well known in the area for the yellow smiling faces that the 101 students and 4 teachers display in the windows. The faces stay the same, but the students add decorations depending on the time of the year. For
example, at Easter the smiley faces display tall easter bunny ears.
After September 11th, the smiley faces waved American flags and proclaimed "We love the USA!"
Now, on the eve of the school closing, the smiley faces wave goodbye and shed a tear.
Posted near the school door is a letter from a former student who expressed sadness that the school is closing. He said that he remembers coming to school each day and seeing the smiley faces greeting him. He requested that the students save him a smiley face as a rememberance of the happy times he spent there.
We have provided a few pictures of the school below. Click on the thumbnail of each picture for a larger view. Use the "BACK" button on your browser to return

Even the playground area on the side of the school is decorated with a large yellow smiley face. And yes, more smiling faces greet you there too.

This picture, drawn by a Smiley school student, is displayed on the front door. The title reads "SMILEY SCHOOL - AS WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER IT!" The uneven
color is caused by a glare on the glass door. [click picture for larger view]

Finally, a closeup of the goodbye message the students have displayed in the two large windows at each end of the school (refer to first photo above). The first part reads "IT IS TIME" and the second part reads "TO SAY GOODBYE".
