Jan 10, 2010: "Project Happiness"

A great find at the wine store - Project Happiness Chardonnay, 2008 California. The label reads "Finally, somebody put it in a bottle, Happiness. Sure took a while, though. Seeking happiness? What makes happiness? We winemakers pondered this one afternoon in the Cellar. Marriage? Kids? Satellite TV? Get your boss fired. Remember the 1950s, try to forget the 1980s. Wear searsucker at least once. Adopt a dog? Maybe a cat. Perhaps you're more the box turtle type. As bold supporters of the mischief that ensues upon opening a bottle, we pose the question to you and hope that in the end, you at least believe in the satisfaction of an empty bottle..." But then you look on the back and there is that really cute smiley face!

"My bird (like a family member) was very upset his yo-yo was thrown away," said Jeanette, "he started getting aggressive and biting where he never did things like that before, so I knew it was the loss of his toy." The yo-yo has to be metal and the Smiley Store didn't have a metal yo-yo at the time. But we quickly found one and now Blue is happy again. "He flips the yo-yo into things," said Jeanette, "and then flies to you and chirps so you will get it for him." You just can't help but to be happy for a bird as cute as Blue!

So we decided to elaborate a little more on the "island" theme with a neon smiley face sign on the tree house that lights up the yard at night, a tiki hut complete with flamingos, and a stone carved with "Smiley Face Island" on it (see inset above). - Sally Ladisic

Sep 19, 2004: The Original Smiley Pin

This is the original smiley button pin designed by Harvey Ball in 1963. Most people don't realize how small it was, less than an inch across. The reverse side has been enlarged to show the printing inside. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company needed a logo that would uplift its employees after a company merger had hurt morale, and thus the enduring icon was born. Notice the pin extends beyond the edge of the button - a sure sign of an "antique" pin.

Sep 05, 2004: The Smiley School, Haverhill, MA

Built in 1914 and named for James V. Smiley, the third mayor of Haverhill, the "Smiley School" was finally closed after the 2001-2002 school year. It served kindergarten through second grade with 101 students and 4 teachers. The school became well known in the area because the students decorated the windows with yellow smiley faces. On holidays, the faces stayed the same but, for example, at Easter the smiley faces would display tall easter bunny ears. After September 11th, the smiley faces waved American flags and proclaimed "We love the USA!" Finally, as shown in this picture when the school closing was announced, the smiley faces waved goodbye and shed a tear... Picture submitted by Melissa Balch, Plaistow, NH
