Meet the Judge
Contest entries were judged by Mr. Smiley, an expert in the field of art and humor since 1963. Works by Mr. Smiley have appeared on t-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, and countless other items, and have been enjoyed in countries all around the world.
"I've never met a smile I didn't like," said Smiley, "and I do my best to make everyone else smile too!" If you don't know Mr. Smiley personally, you've probably met his many representatives who are all around us every day.
Judge's Review
"This contest was very hard to judge" said Smiley. "I just kept laughing so much that I almost never got to the end of all the entries. I declare you all winners! Okay, I guess I can't do that, but you all deserve it!"
"In the first place entry," said Smiley, "Gregory showed an awareness of the cartoon elements, yet didn't settle for the obvious smiley pun as he reached for a sophisticated humorous statement. It is very effective!"
"The success of Kelly's second place entry," said Smiley, "is about the dichotomy of different time eras. The speaker seems pre-1963, yet the visiting "aliens" seem as if they're from tomorrow. I really enjoyed this caption!"
"Julie's third place entry is funny because it reminds us of the seemingly impossible task of getting some people to smile, no matter what," said Smiley.
"The two Honorable Mentions are unique in that, while being funny, they express universal truths about the power of a smile."
"Thanks for letting me be a part of this terrific Smiley Cartoon Caption contest!" said Mr. Smiley. "Every single entry shows a keen sense of humor and you really made my day! Keep smiling!"
