RACEWAY VIEW: 1940s
This picture looks south-west, with the main mill building at the far end of the raceway. The low, one-story, building at the north-end end of the mill building is the wheel house. It contains the turbine water wheel, main shaft and flywheel, and a generating plant. The water here is not the Haw River, but rather the "raceway" where water is diverted from the Haw River to flow down this path for 400 yards to the wheel house, and then through a tail race back to the Haw River.
