FRONT STREET, DOWN THE HILL: 1975

Homes on Front Street

This view is west on Front Street, down the hill toward the main mill building. The mill can be seen at the base of the hill. My oldest brother and sister were born at Glencoe in homes like this.

Although indoor plumbing was never added to the homes, electrical lines were eventually extended from the mill building to the homes to provide lighting. However, this also meant that the mill owners controlled the electricity. Every night, at the time that the mill owners thought workers should be in bed, the electricity would be turned off at the source in the mill. After that, anyone who wanted to stay up to read or perform chores had to use a lantern.
