At a point 400 yards northwest of the main mill building, a concrete dam runs 250 feet across the Haw River. The dam creates a small pond from which a raceway channels the water to the wheel house at the north end of the main mill building and then back to the Haw River.

Initially, Glencoe operated its machinery with power generated by the wheel house turbine and transfered via shafts, pulleys, and belts to the equipment. In 1894, Glencoe began to generate electricity for lighting, but not for the machinery. It was not until the late 1930s that Glencoe finally installed electric motors to drive the production machinery.
