MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETINGS

1936

The original records are located at Glencoe Baptist Church. The records are handwritten and difficult to read at times. I have generally tried to be accurate in regards to the original spelling and grammer. Appreciation is extended to Glencoe Baptist Church for granting permission to use this document.


Jan 5, 1936

A meeting of the board of Deacons were held here in the church this afternoon at 2 oclock with three of the Deacons present, as follows. Chairman Bro. Herman Montgomery, Bro Jim Allen & Bro. John Allen.

The meeting was opened with scripture reading by Bro. H. R. Montgomery. Bro. John Allen led in prayer.

Bro Frank Swaim was recomened as janitor in the church.

The following were recomended as a committee to secure ways are to go after any one desiring to come to our church to worship - Bro. C. F. Phillips, Bro Junious Rascoe, Bro Joe Foushee.

After which we were dismissed with prayer by the church clerk.

Jan 15, 1936

A meeting of the board of Deacons and Trustees were held here in the church at 7.15 Wednesday evening before prayer service. The following Deacons & Trustees were present and also the pastor. Bro Jim Allen, C. F. Phillips, Junious Rascoe, Otho Ross, C. D. Dean, Joe Morene & Nathan Pennington.

The meeting was opened with prayer by the pastor.

The object of the meeting was to discuss plans for building more class rooms for our church as we are greatly in need of them. All of the Deacons & Trustees felt like we should take steps in this at once. Bro Nathan P. made a motion that the church go ahead with the church project in regards to building. This motion was seconed by Mr. Rascoe, after which a unamious vote was made. Several good talks were given by various ones in regards to building plans.

After which they adjourned for prayer service.

Feb 2, 1936

The board of Deacons together with the pastor met at the church this afternoon at 2.30.

Bro H. R. Montgomery read the scripture, with the pastor leading in prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the clerk. The main object of this meeting was to make some plans for the church. Several plans were discussed to be taken up at a later date. But nothing was passed upon to be recomemded to the church.

After the discussion we were dismissed with prayer by Bro J. Rascoe.

March 1, 1936

The board of Deacons met at the church at 2.30 this afternoon.

The meeting was opened with Scripture reading by the chairman Bro Herman Montgomery with the pastor leading in prayer.

It was discussed about having our revival and study course combined. It was recomemed by the board to hold our revival seperate from the study course.

Special Gift for home missions was $6.72 to Mr R. Cobb. March 1, 1936

The above recomendations were approved and adopted by the church in con. tonight before the worship hour.

March 8, 1936

After the S. S. hour this a.m. Bro C. F. Phillips asked the church for permission to plant a row of hedge around and in front of the church. The motive of doing this was to beautify the church grounds and to keep cars from driving up on the church yard. Bro. Phillips said he would donate all of the hedgeing. He only asked for some one to help dig a ditch to plant the hedge in. The church granted him this privalege.

April 5, 1936

The board of Deacons together with the pastor had thier regular monthly meeting this afternoon at 2.30 here in the church. The following buisiness was transacted.

1. Scripture reading by H. R. Montgomery.

2. prayer by the pastor.

3. Minutes of the last meeting were read by the clerk.

4. Discussions as to securing a Janitor for the church as Bro. Swaim had resigned. Leroy Morene is recomened by the board to the church as Janitor.

5. It was moved that we recomend to the church to authorize the trustees to have some new steps put up out at the pastorium as this needs to be done very badly.

6. A motion was in order to adjourn.

7. Dismissed by Bro Rascoe.

The above recomemdations were excepted by the church in con. tonight before the preaching service. Also the building project of more class rooms were adopted by the church.

A special Gift of $6.33 was given to Mr. & Mrs. Record today. Mrs. Record is seriously sick. Also Mr Record has a broken arm.

Also a special Gift of $10.50 was given to the Red Cross to help the victims of the tornado in Greensboro. That happened this past week.

April 12, 1936

At the close of the morning worship hour the doors of the church were opened by the pastor for Receptance of any who wished to unite with our church. Bro T. J. Foster & his wife Sis. Eva Foster came foward and was received as a canidate for Baptism. Also Bro. A. B. Hall was received into church by letter.

April 26, 1936

Our pastor preached a wonderful sermon this morning. The subject was {Follow me.} At the closing song, Miss Lillie Cobb came foward & stated she wished to unite with our church by letter. As she was a member of Carr's Chapel Baptist Church. She was unamiously received by all members present.

April 26, 1936

The board of Deacons and Trustees were called together in a meeting today after the morning worship hour with the fowolling present. H. R. Mongomery chairman of the board of Deacons, Jim Allen, Junious Rascoe, Joe Morene, Nathan Pennington, Otho Ross, and the pastor. The meeting was opened with prayer by Bro. Rascoe.

Plans for the building prodject of more class rooms were thoroughly discussed by those present. It was sugested that the board of trustees together with the Deacons be the building committees. The board's recomendo to the church that we build five additional class rooms to the rear of the church, conditionaly six rooms after the building is started if the church & building com. decide the same. Also that any sugestions are alternations could be made at a later date.

The board of Deacons recomend to the church that we have our revival meeting beginning the 2nd Sunday in May with our pastor doing the preaching. If the church wants to have a revival.

A motion to adjourn was in order. Dismissal prayer by the pastor.

May 11, 1936

Our pastor preached a great sermon tonight. At the close of the sermon Sister Gordie Hall, Forest and Deleano Hall came foward and asked for admission into the church by letter, as they were then members of the Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church. They were received by a unameous vote.

May 17, 1936

The Board of Deacons met this a.m. after the preaching service with the buisiness as follows.

The board recomends that we elect a new Sec. for the S. S. as our present Sec. is not taken the interest he should as a official of the church. They recomend to the church Sister Opal Phillips as Sec. and Nathan Pennington as Asst Sec.

May 20, 1936

The church was called in conference tonight by the pastor before prayer meeting. The above recomendation from the board of Deacons were aproved and excepted by the church.

May 31, 1936

Tonight our pastor preached a great soul stirring heart thrilling sermon. God wonderfuly blesssed everyone present through this great message. At the close of the Sermon the Doors of the church were opened by the pastor for receptance of members. Mrs. Jim McKinney came foward and asked for admission into the church by letter. She at that time was a member of Bains Baptist Church. She was received by a unameous vote by all members present.

June 3rd, 1936

Tonight before the prayer service the church letters of Bro A. B. Hall, his wife, Sister Gordie Hall, and thier two children, Forest and Deleano, from the Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church were read by the pastor. They were in full fellowship and good standing with the above church. They were recieved into full fellowship with our church and made to feel they were welcomed into our fold.

June 27, 1936

Today at 2.30 we gathered at the church pool for a baptismal service with our pastor reading scripture selections, prayer by Mr. Forbes, and the following were baptized by our pastor.

Bro. T. J. Foster & his wife Sis. Eva Foster.

After the baptism the right hand of church fellowship was extended to them.

July 5, 1936

To Day our pastor preached a great sermon at the 11 oclock worship hour. And at the close of the Sermon Bro. & Sister W. G. Tankersely and thier Daughter Estelle Tankersely came foward and asked for addmission into our church Bringing with them thier church letter from Antioch Baptist Church. The pastor of our church read to the church thier letter. They were in full fellowship and good standing. It was moved and seconded that we recieve them, and they were fully welcomed by the pastor & members. Also recieved the right hand of church fellowship.

July 5, 1936

The board of Deacons met today after the preaching Service. The buisiness was as follows.

1. Moved and seconed & so ordered that they recomend to the church Bro. T. J. Foster as Teacher for the young mens Bible class. Filling the vacancy made by Bro. Haris Rascoe leaving us.

2. They also recomend the following, as a committee to get up the program for our 43rd anaveresy, with a home coming Day for the 18th of Oct. 1936.

July 19, 1936

Before the preaching service tonight the church was called in a short conference by the pastor. The buisiness was as follows.

At the recomendation of the board of Deacons & trustees we elected Bro. T. J. Foster for our Building Sec. & tres.

Also the following pledges were made to be used for building our new class rooms.

July 26, 1936

Today after the morning worship hour our pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson read to the church Sis. Jim McKenney church letter from Baynes Baptist Church. The letter stated Sis. McKinney was in good standing and in full fellowship with them. On May 31st 1936 she came foward and asked for admission into our church by letter as she was a member of Baynes Baptist church. After the pastor read her letter, she was unameously recieved into our mist and was extended the right hand of church fellowship.

Aug 9, 1936

The church was called in conference this a.m. just before the worship hour by our pastor. Our pastor read the church letter of Bro. G. L. Murray from the Hocutt Memorial Baptist church. It was Bro. Murray desire to join our church. The Hocutt church cordially recomended Bro. Murray to our church. Bro Murray had formerly belonged to our church and was lisenced to preach by our church. But as he left us to unite with the Hocutt Memorial church, we coulld not grant him lisence to preach in joing some other church. So his lisence ended in leaving us. But after our pastor read his church letter to us, it was moved & seconded that recieve Bro Murray in full fellowship and lisence be granted him to preach again.

Aug 16, 1936

Our pastor brought us a wonderful message tonight and at the close of the sermon the doors of the church were opened by the pastor. Bro. Herman Cobb and his wife sis. Lucy Cobb came foward and desired to unite with our church by Baptism. They were unameously recieved by the church. Bro & Sis Cobb were converted in our prayer service this afternoon at the home of Sis. Lillie Cobb.

Aug 23, 1936

The board of Deacons met this a.m. at the close of the preaching service.

The object of this meeting was to recomend to the church a Sec. for the church filling the vacancy of our Sec. Bro. Delbert Phillips who has joined the U. S. Army.

Bro Otho Ross was nominated by Bro. C. F. Phillips, and seconded by Bro. J Rascoe. A vote was taken and was so ordered.

The church was called in conference tonight before the preaching hour by the chairman of Board of Deacons H. Montgomery. The above recomendation of the board of Deacons were excepted and passed apon by the church.

Aug 23rd, 1936

Tonight before the preaching service, our pastor read the church letter of Bro. S. U. Baize from the First Baptist Church of Christ at Ethridge. This letter certified that Bro. Baize was a member of the above church and was in good standing. And at Bro. Baize request was given this letter of dismissal to unite with another church of the same faith & order. It was Bro. Baize desire to unite with our church, the Glencoe Baptist Church. After the reading of Bro. Baize letter he was recieved into our church by a unameous vote.

Sept 19, 1936

Today at 1.45 p.m. we gathered at the river for a Baptismal Service. The following were Baptised by our pastor. Mr Herman Cobb and his wife Mrs. Lucy Cobb.

Sept 25, 1936

Tonight before the preaching service, a call for a short conference was asked by Bro. C. F. Phillips. The motive being as to releasing our pastor from the mill work so that he could put his full time to the ministry. Bro Phillips gave a splendid talk conserning this. Also Bro. T. J. Foster expressed his view points. There were 45 members present. It was the desire of the entire body to take the pastor out of the mill. But it was not passed upon due to the fact that the church thought we should be much in prayer and seek the divine guidance of God. While the church was in conference, Bro Phillips asked for permission to secure funds from the church treas to pay for expences of our approaching Home coming Day program. This being granted by the church.
