MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETINGS

1935

The original records are located at Glencoe Baptist Church. The records are handwritten and difficult to read at times. I have generally tried to be accurate in regards to the original spelling and grammer. Appreciation is extended to Glencoe Baptist Church for granting permission to use this document.


Jan 6, 1935

This afternoon the church and S. S. officers and teachers met at the church with the following business transacted.

1. Scripture reading by the pastor Ralph A. Wilson.

2. Prayer - pastor.

3. Discussion for a S. S. Supt. Bro Junius Rascoe was sugested for Supt. Everyone present expressed their most earnest desire for Bro Rascoe to become our S. S. Supt. for this coming 12 months, after which he was unamiously elected.

4. Bro Herman Montgomery was unamiously elected teacher for the Junior boys class, ages 9-12.

5. Mrs. A. B. Hall was elected teacher for the young Ladies class, by a unamious vote.

6. A three month program was adopted by the church for the S. School and church. Inez Ashworth was elected chairman of the program comittee with Opal Phillips, Edna Tyson, Margaret Phillips, and A. B. Hall also as program comittees.

7. Bro Tom Tyson was elected as the announcer for the church & S. S.

8. Adoption of a plan for the S. S. to revise the roll every thirty days instead of every three months.

9. Recomened that all church members that do not attend church with out some reasonable excuse for the space of three months time be put on the inactive list. And that a special comittee visit the inactive members and see if we cant get them active again.

10. Bro C. F. Phillips, chairman of the board of Deacons, expressed that as his work kept him away from home & church a great portion of the time, that he thought it would be wise to elect another chairman, but that he would still continue to be a Deacon. Bro John R. Allen, Senior Deacon, was elected temorally chairman.

After which we were dismissed by A. B. Hall.

Feb 28, 1935

On Feb 28, 1935, God in infinite wisdom called one or our Dear Beloved members Sister M. W. Tickle to come and reign with Him throughout Eternity. Her funeral will be preached March 2 at the Glencoe Baptist Church were she was a devout and loyal member - with the pastor Rev. Ralph A. Wilson officiating.

Wed. night - the church was called in conference, before prayer meeting. Discussion as to renting the pastoram to Mr. Petty. By the members present, it was voted by a majority to rent it to Mr. Petty at $10.00 per month.

April 28, 1935

The church was called in conference after S. S. this A. M.

1. Discussion as to having full time services. Several of the members expressed their most earnest desire that the church have full time services. After which a most unamous vote was made that we have full time services. Beginning with the first Sunday in May 1935. The pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson stated he wanted the cooperation of each member in promoting the work of God.

2. Also it was decided to make an every member canvass and invite them to attend church and to invite anyone to our S. S. and church that were not attending some other church.

3. Discussion as to renewing our officers and teachers meetings.

4. Discussion as to when we would have our revial. It was left to decide later.

May 15, 1935

The church was called in a short conference Wed. night after prayer service. Mr Junious Rascoe stated that the princapal from Pleasent Grove High School wished to borrow the wire table belonging to the church for the picnic which was to be held on the School grounds at the School closing. It was highly favored by the members present and was voted that the church lend the table to them. Included in the vote that the one who came after the table be responsable for its return. After which we were dismissed.

May 26, 1935

After the preaching service this morning, the senior Deacon Bro J. R. Allen called the Deacons with the pastor in a conference.

1. Bro J. R. Allen led in prayer.

2. Discussion as to who the church would secure in helping in our revival which is to be held at a near date. It was sugested that we get Rev. Swaney pastor of the Glenhope Baptist Church. Every one present was highly in favor of securing him. Bro C. F. Phillips, Bro Junious Rascoe, Bro Joe Tickle commented their desires in securing Bro Swaney. A unamous vote was made that we get him. Also Bro Geo. Phillips asked that the church get him two brooms and a light bulb.

July 6, 1935

This morning after the preaching service, the church was in conference by the pastor, with the buisiness as follows.

Sister Annie Ivey Williams asked that the church grant her a letter that she might join the Glenhope Baptist Church. The church in conference voted to grant her the letter in full fellowship and good standing to join the Glenhope Baptist Church. Afterwards, a song and prayer.

June 23 - July 12, 1935

The series of revival meetings of the Glencoe Baptist Church began the 4th Sunday in June1935 with our pastor - Rev R. A. Wilson preaching a wonderful soul stirring sermon at the eleven oclock hour. At the evening hour of worship, he preached at the Glenhope Baptist Church, with it's pastor - Rev. Geo Swaney coming to our church to preach through out the remander of the meeting, with exception of the first Sunday in July, that he went back home to preach in his church. Our pastor preached both morning and evening services in our church.

God wonderfully blessed us. Several of our members rededicated their lives unto the Lord and quite a few people were converted. There were a goodly number of Bro. Swaney good people. Also Rev. Harry Gauldin and quite a number of his people from the Altamaha Baptist Church attended the meeting faithfully and showed a great spirit of interest and cooperation in singing and personal work. Also there were quite a number of good people from other churches attended and showed a wonderfull spirit of interest.

Our pastor expressed in behalf of the church and also of himself, the appreciation to Bro Swaney and to each and every one for their faithfullness in attendance and the Christ like spirit that was so graciously shown. This meeting continued untill Friday night July 12, 1935.

July 14, 1935

Today we had a large attendance in our S. School and church services. Bro Joe Foushee from Burlington taught the men and women's Bible classes in a body.

After the S. S. hour, our pastor, Rev. R. A. Wilson brought a wonderfull message, using as the subject, The Garding Angel. At the 8 p.m. worship hour, he preached another great inspirational sermon. After the sermon Sister Beatrice Allen came foward and rededicted her life unto the Lord.

It was a wonderfull Day in the Lord.

Our pastor preached at Roney's Chapel at 4 p.m. today. Also he visited Bro Scott, who is sick and led in a prayer service there.

July 17, 1935

The church was called in conference by the pastor before prayer meeting tonight. Doors of the church were opened. Bro Ernest D Murray was received as a canidate for Baptism.

July 20, 1935

At 1:30 p.m. we gathered at Bro Junious Rascoe's pond for Baptism. Our pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson read various passages of Scripture, and made a very interesting talk, on obedience to Christ commands and His Holy Ordinances. Bro Will Forbis led in parayer. We sang a hymm and our pastor Baptized the following. Bro Junious Rascoe and Ernest D. Murray after which we sang a hymm and was dismissed by prayer.

Our pastor stated that at the morning hour of worship, that the right hand of Fellowship would be extened to the ones that were just Baptized.

July 21, 1935

We had a large attendance in the Sunday School & Church services today. The Young Ladies class of our church visited the Young People's class at the Glenhope Baptist Church in the S. S. hour but came back here for church services.

Rev Joe Foushee from Burlington, preached at the 11 oclock hour. At the close of the Sermon, Our pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson asked the members of the church and all Christian Friends who wished, To come foward & extend to Bro Junious Rascoe and Bro Ernest D. Murray the right hand of fellowship and a welcome into the church.

July 21, 1935

Our pastor preached a real inspiring Sermon tonight, using as the Subject Reasoning With God. At the close of the Sermon, The Doors of the Church were opened. Bro Virgil Ashworth came foward, and asked that he be re-enstated into the church. He rededicated his life unto the Lord during the series of Revival that was recently held in our church. 

The church was called in conference by the pastor. A unamious vote was made that Bro Virgil be re-enstated and in full fellowship with the church. After which we were dismissed by prayer.

July 28, 1935

Today after the S. S. hour our pastor gave the worship hour over to our S. S. Supt. Bro Junious Rascoe who called the S. S. together in a conference, with the business as follows.

Bro Rascoe made a spendid talk on S. S. work. He asked the cooperation of all the Teachers and members of the S. S. Bro J. R. Allen also made a good talk. Bro G. L. Murray made a talk. He gave several good sugestions on S. S. work. Also pointed out the great need that we were in for more class rooms. Rev Joe Foshee made a interesting lecture, also giving some good sugestions.

Bro A. B. Hall expressed his thoughts in regards to the upbuilding of the church and S. S. Our pastor stated that he thought all the timely sugestions should be adopted by the S. S. He made a motion to effect that we adopt the same. This motion was seconded. A unamious vote was made by those present.

The pastor called the church in conference right after the S. S. conference with the following buisiness.

Bro Junious Rascoe gave an accurate amount of money, that the church members had given to the church also the amount of loose plate colection. It was the desire of Bro Rascoe that we work out a budget for the church. He also stated that he thought that we should pay our pastor more than the small amount that we are now paying him. Bro J. R. Allen stated he thought we should pay our pastor more. He explained the expences of our pastor were more than the church was paying him.

At this time the church elected Bro Herman Montgomery as a Deacon. Also elected Bro Junious Rascoe as a Deacon. Bro Herman Montgomery was elected as chairman of the board of Deacons. Bro Sam Lineberry and his sister Anna Lineberry asked for a letter from this church to unite with the Roney's Memoral Baptist Church as charter members. This church was just recently organized. The church voted to grant them their letters.

Bro Geo. Phillips made a talk in regards to the work of the Janitor. He asked if he failed in his duty as a janitor he would appreciate it if some one would tell him.

Bro Frank Swaim stated that he was sorry that he had failed in living up to his Christian duty and had wasted much time that he should have been doing more for his Master & church. He asked the prayers of the Christian people.

Bro J. R. Allen stated that John Cook asked him to have the church to dismiss him from the church as he was not fit to be a member. A motion was made that we dismiss him.

Aug 4, 1935

The board of Deacons were called together in a meeting at the church this afternoon by the chairman, Bro Herman Montgomery.

The meeting was opened by Scripture reading, by Herman Montgomery, with Bro John Allen leading in prayer.

The following was agreed apon by the entire board - that we raise our pastors salary to $20.00 a month, and to include with the pastor's salary, Gasoline expenses, when he is off on buisiness pertaining to church affairs. Also it was agreed apon to send $2.00 per month to missions also to send money to the diferent branches of mission work from time to time. Also to observe the Lords supper every 1st Sunday in every quarter at the evening hour of worship.

Aug 4, 1935

The church was called in conference this a. m. after the worship hour with buisiness as follows.

Bro C. F. Philipps, Joe Morene, and Junious Rascoe were elected as paint comittees, to secure paint for the purpose of painting the church & pastorum roofs. After which we were dismissed with prayer.

Sept 1, 1935

The board of Deacons met at the church this afternoon at 2.30, with the following members present. Chairman Herman Montgomery, Jim Allen, Junious Rascoe, C. F. Phillips. The pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson, church Sec. Delbert Phillips, Tres. C. D. Dean also met with them.

The meeting was opened with Scripture reading by Bro. Montgomery, followed with prayer by the pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson.

I. Bro. Joe Tickle asked that the church remove his name from the Trusteeship and Deaconship of the church. This was his request through Bro. J. R. Allen.

II. Bro. Junious Rascoe made the motion for the nomination of Bro Otho Ross as a Trustee of the church in the place of Bro. Joe Tickle.

III. A proposed Home coming Day was planned for the coming year 1936.

IV. Bro C. F. Phillips made the motion too authorize the treasure to pay the pastor the following Sum $20.00 as salary - all over and above the foresaid amount in treasure be sent to pay missions and too go on the cooperative plan.

V. Bro. Rascoe made a motion that we pay the missions the amount of $12.00 if we have that amount left over after paying the pastors salary $20.00.

VI. Bro Rascoe made a motion that we revise the church roll, listing the active and inactive members, with three months absence from the church signifies an inactive member. Also the board to meet with the officers of the church the 3rd Sunday in Sept at 2 oclock to revise the roll.

VII. A proposed plan for a S. S. study course too be brought before the church for approval.

IX. The pastor made a motion that we adopt the 6 point Record System. Bro Rascoe moved that we aquaint the plan where by we may build up our Sunday School by the use of the 6 point record System.

X. Bro. Rascoe brought the matter before the board of Deacons that Mr. C. W. Petty desires that the interior of the pastorum be painted. Bro Rascoe was in favor of painting it on consideration that the rent be advanced too take care of the cost of paint.

XI. The pastor made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Bro Montgomery. Benidiction by Bro Rascoe.


Sept 1, 1935

The church was called in conference tonight before the worship hour by the pastor Rev. R. A. Wilson. Bro Herman Montgomery chairman of board of Deacons read the minutes of the meeting of the board of deacons that was held here in church this afternoon. The following items of buisiness were taken up and a most unamious vote was made by the members on the following.

I. Bro Joe Tickle was released as a Deacon also as trustee at his own request.

II. Bro Otho Ross was elected as trustee in Bro Tickle's place.

III. The treasure was authorized by the church to pay to the pastor the sum of $20.00 as salary and the remander in treasure to be paid to missions.

IV. It was moved to send the amount of $12.00 to missions if we had that amount after paying the pastor's salary.

V. A motion was made that we revise the church roll listing the active and inactive members, with three months absence from the church signifing and inactive member. Also the board of Deacons and all church officials to meet at the church the 3rd Sunday in Sept. at 2 oclock to revise the roll and take up other matters of buisiness.

VI. The church approved the plan of a S. S. study course to be held in the near future.

VII. The following committees were elected as a nomination committee for the church and Sunday School officials.

VIII. The 6 point record system was readopted again, at the sugestion of our pastor. Also it was moved that we aquaint the 6 point record system to the Sunday School, where by we would be enabled to build up the S. School.

After which we entered in the worship hour, and our pastor brought us a great message.

Sept 15, 1935

The pastor, together with the board of Deacons and church officials met at the church this afternoon, with the buisiness as follows. The meeting was opened with Scripture reading and prayer by J. R. Allen.

I. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the clerk.

II. The church roll was revised and a active and a inactive list of members were made. It was decided to appoint a committee to see the inactive members and see if we could not get them active again.

III. A budget for the coming year was highly approved by everyone present. It was recommended that it be presented to the church for a approval.

IV. Bro C. D. Dean, church treasure, read the financial report for the month of August.

V. A motion was made and highly approved by everyone present. To centralize the Sunday School treasure, and all other minor treasue's together with the church treasure. And that our present church treasure Bro C. D. Dean continue to be treasure. Also that Bro Dean be authorized to secure record books so that a accurate record could be kept. And that a report be given every month of all money received, and all disenbursments.

VI. Bro C. F. Phillips and Bro Junous Rascoe were appointed to secure the banner and other equipments for the 6 point record system of the Sunday School.

Sept 29, 1935

Tonight we had a brief preaching service in order to have our anual church conference. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the clerk. Also the recomendations of the Deacons were read.

1. Bro C. F. Phillips made a motion that we include in our budget the amount of $5.00 for the field worker.

2. A motion was made and adopted that we pay our Janitor $1.00 more per month making a total of $3.00 per month.

3. The recomendation of the board of Deacons was that we set our budget as $481.00 for the coming year. But the church did not feel like that was enough, so it was raised to $600.00.

4. A motion was made & seconed that we centralize the S. S. treasure and all minor treasures together with the church treasure.

5. The recomendation of the nomination committee was approved & adopted by the church. It was as follows.

Wednesday night after the prayer service, the church was called in conference by the pastor.

Nov 3, 1935

The board of Deacons met at the church this afternoon at 2 oclock. The meeting was opened with Scripture reading by Bro. Herman Montgomery chairman of the board. Bro J. R. Allen led in prayer. The buisiness was as follows.

1. The minutes of the last meeting were read.

2. The report of the every member canvass was taken up, but could not be completed untill the committees returned all report cards in. We are asking the committees to return all the report cards and the names all of they had that they were unable to see.

3. Sister Addie Massey told Bro. Jim Allen also Bro Herman Montgomery that she requested the church to dismiss her from the church roll. Bro. J. R. Allen made a motion that the church dismiss her at her own request. This motion was seconed by Bro Junious Rascoe.

4. Since we have centralized the Sunday School treasure together with the church treasure, the question arose in regards to sending the collection of the S. School on Orphange Day, as to where it would come in under the church are be specified from the Sun. School. It was sugested that it be specified from the S.S.

5. Bro J. R. Allen that we have our S. S. Supt. Bro Junious Rascoe name put on the bulletin board.

6. Bro J. R. Allen stated that he had been informed that some one had been bothering cars and disturbing out in front of the church during preaching services at night and that some that owned cars were afraid to come in for service for fear that thier car would be bothered. Bro. Rascoe made a motion that we appoint a committee consisting of Bro. Jim Allen & Bro. Geo Sexton to watch out and see if they could find out who it is, and that they be invited in the church and if they would not come in to order them off the church grounds.

7. Bro. J. R. Allen stated that Bro. G. M. Phillips asked if the church would secure some paint to paint the church porch. Bro. C. D. Dean said he had a half a gallon of good paint and if the church wanted it, he would sell it for $1.00.

8. A motion was in order to adjourn. Bro Rascoe dismissed the board with prayer.

Nov 3, 1935

The above recomendations were excepted and passed by the church in conference tonight before the preaching service.


Nov 10, 1935

The church in conference this morning before the worship hour. Granted Bro C. F. Phillips the privalidge to secure two arrows with the name of the church placed upon it and that they be placed on the highway # pointing to the church. Also the Deacons were instructed to have the bulletin board repainted at an early date as they had already been authorized by the church to repaint it.

Dec 1, 1935

A special meeting of the board of Deacons were held here at the church this afternoon, with the following present.

Chairman, Bro. Herman Montgomery, Bro J. R. Allen, Junious Rascoe, James Allen, C. F. Phillips, and Bro. Joe Morene.

Bro Rascoe led in prayer. A motion was made to elect a janitor for the church. Bro Herman Montgomery and Bro Dean Wrenn were nominated. A vote was taken and Bro. Dean Wrenn was elected.

Our birthday box for xmas was opened. Bro Joe Morene counted the following amount of money that was in the box to date, was $13.13
