MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETINGS

1925

The original records are located at Glencoe Baptist Church. The records are handwritten and difficult to read at times. I have generally tried to be accurate in regards to the original spelling and grammer. Appreciation is extended to Glencoe Baptist Church for granting permission to use this document.


 

March 9, 1925

On March 9, 1925 God came and called our Sister Mrs R. M. Miller to come up with him.


 

May 3, 1925

On May 3, 1925 God came and called our sister Mrs J. J. Murray to come up and live with him.


 

May 24, 1925

After Sunday School the church granted letters to the following - Bro Raney Miller to Hocutt Memo., Sisters Pearl, Annie & Bessie McKenney to Burlington.


 

May 31, 1925

After Sunday School the pastor opened the doores of the church and the following were received for baptism - Thomas Coble Jr., Nathan Pennington, Ruth Coble, Mrs H. C. Wilson.


 

June 7, 1925

After Sunday School the doores were opened and the following was received into the church for baptism - Alton Roberson, J. W. Brooks and wife, Mrs Thomas Coble Jr. Mr W. H. Hall was received by experience Baptism he being already baptized and


 

June 14, 1925

After Sunday School the pastor preached and opened the doors of the church and the following were received for Baptism - J. W. Dickens, Inez Ashworth, Fenly Murray & Yerby Payne.

At 2:30 p.m. we gathered by the River and held a brief service at which time Mrs. J. W. Dickens was received for baptism. And the following were baptised following this service - Mr. W. H. Hall, Mr & Mrs J. W. Dickens, Mr & Mrs T. M. Coble Jr., Ruth Coble, Fenly Murray, Yerby Payne, Mr & Mrs John W. Brooks, Nathan Pennington, Inez Ashworth, Alton Roberson.

At 7:45 p.m. on this date the pastor held a short service and after this we sellibrated the Lords Supper and gave the right hand of church fellowship to all that were baptized, except Fenly Murray. A letter was granted Sister J. L McKenney to join First Church Burlington.

June 25, 1925

After prayer meeting which was led by the Womens Federation our pastor offered his Resignation and asked the Decons to take actions when they see fit.


 

June 29, 1925

The Board of Deacons met to act upon some very important business: the following members were present - Bros R. A. Wilson, G. L. Murray, G. T. Fawcette, J. R. Allen, C. F. Phillips, A. B. Hall. Bro. J. R. Allen led us in prayer. After singing a hymn #156 and reading the 5th chapter of Pauls Letter to the Gal., Bro A. B. Hall was Elected as chairman.

The following business was transacted, to wit: The statement of Bro G. L. Murray which he made some time ago asking the Church to dismiss him at his own request. After this question was discussed Bro Murray was called upon to make his statement. Bro stated he has desided to remain with the church if it pleases the church to do so.

Next was the Resignation of Bro Lennon, stated by the chair. After discussion the vote was taken that we recommend to the church to accept the resignation of our pastor to take effect at his will, and that we bid him "Gods speed in his field of work."

The Board of Decons recommend that we appoint a pulpit committee of which the following is recommended - A. B. Hall, G. L. Murray, C. F. Phillips.

Bro Wilson stated that he wished to resign as a member of the Board of Decons and sugest we recommend Bro J. W. Dickens in his place. This is done for the purpose of giving some of the new members an office. Moved and second and carried we accept Bro Wilson resignation.

Moved and second that we call a meeting of the church the second Sunday in July at the night service. No further business. Moved we adjourne.

P. S. after the above meeting Bro Hall invited the Board out on the church porch where he served a nice watermellon which was greatly enjoyed by all. - C. F. Phillips, C. C.


 

July 12, 1925

Sunday School 150 present. Preaching following the Sunday School a good crowd present. Following the preaching the church was called into conference. Moved and second and ordered we not have roll call.

After reading minutes of the past meeting, the following was desided upon.

Moved and second we show by vote to Bro Murray that we are glad he has desided to remain with us.

Next actions in regard to our pastors resin. was taken. Moved and second we accept the resignation of our pastor to take effect at the second second Sunday in August 1925 and after this date he stated he would serve any time we needed him.

Moved and second and ordered we accept the resignation of Bro Wilson as deacon and Bro J. W. Dickens was elected in his place.

Moved and second and ordered we ordain the deacons just one month from today - Second Sunday in August.


 

July 16, 1925

After prayer meeting the doores of the Church was opened and the following canadates was received for Baptism and giving the right hand of welcome - Mr Marvin Smith, William Payne, Leona Smith.


 

July 19, 1925

After Sunday School the doores of the church were opened for the receiving of new members. Bro Otha Ross was received and giving the right hand of welcome.


 

July 19, 1925

The church met at the river side and the pastor baptized the following - Marvin Smith, Leona Smith, William Payne, Otha Ross, Clyde R. Roney, William C. Roney.


 

July 26, 1925

On this date the church met over at Deep Creek and our pastor preached at the 3 oclock hour. After preaching the doores of the church was opened for the reception of members and the following was received and baptized after preaching - Mr & Mrs Henry Warren and Mr C. F. Blanchard.


 

July 30, 1925

After prayer meeting the church was called into special conference by the Board of Deacons for the purpose of calling a new pastor to this field.

After hearing the statement of the Board of pulpit committee, recommended to the church to extend Bro J. A. Hackney of Morganton, N. C. a call to be our pastor and under shepard.

The church unanimously extended a call to Bro Hackney to be our pastor and under Shepard. Members present: 25, members voted: 25. No further business. Moved we adjourne.

Aug 9, 1925

Today pastor R. S. Lennon preached at 11 oclock and at 7/45 he preached his farewell sermon to a large audaunce and after preaching the church gave the right hand of church fellowship the following new members - Mr & Mrs Warren, Mr Chas Blanchard and others.


 

Aug 13, 1925

Pastor Lennon moved his family to Spencer thus closing 4 years and 8 months of services.


 

Aug 28, 1925

Church met in special conference for the purpose of getting some one to lone us $300.00 to take up note due on house. Bro Wilson stated he would lone the amont. It was so ordered that we accept his lone and give him the same endorsement we gave the Bank.

It was also ordered we with draw fellowship from Sister Martha James at her own request. No further business. Moved we adjourn untill Thursday night Sept 3, 1925 for another church conference.

Sept 1, 1925

On this date our pastor moved into the village to live with us. Rev J. A. Hackney and family from Morganton, N. C.


 

Sept 3, 1925

Church was called together in special conference by the pastor acting as Moderator. After hearing the statements made by the clerk, the mod- led the discussion on financing the debt on the church and how to raise it. Moved and second we accept the suggestion offered by the Mod. to have an every member canvass. It was so ordered.

Two weeks from tonight we will have another special conference fo the purpose of starting an every member canvass.

A motion to instruct the clerk to order envelopes for the coming year. The motion was so ordered.

No further business. A motion to adjorn was moved and seconded and so ordered.

Sept 6, 1925

After preaching by the pastor J. A. Hackney the doors of the church were opened for the reception of members and the following was received by letter - Rev. J. A. Hackney and wife, Mr Geo Hackney & wife, Mr Paul Hackney, Miss Sallie Hackney. Mrs Geo Hackney and Miss Maggie Evans were received for baptism.

Sept 16, 1925

The board of decons met at the pastors home. The following were present: J. R. Allen, G. T. Fawcette, G. L. Murray, C. F. Phillips. The following were absent: James Allen, John Dickens, A. B. Hall.

The following business was transacted. The matter regarding giving Bro Ivey Johnson License. Was a motion recommending same to church by Bro Allen and seconded by Bro Fawcette was unanimously ordered.

A motion recommending an every member canvass regarding the weekly pay plan for the support of the church was unanimously carried.

A motion recommending asking aid from the asso. & Board was unanimously carried.

A motion to have our clerk write each delinquent member a letter asking for support, both financial and spirital, was unanimously ordered.

A motion to have the Lords Supper on the first Sunday in each quarter at 730 service. The motion was unanimously carried.

A motion to have our services on each first sunday at 11 and 730 and second and fourth at 730. Unanimously carried.

A motion to accept the gift offered by Bros C. F. Phillips and A. B. Hall - a quanity of wine to be used in the Lords Supper was unanimously carried.

Sept 17, 1925

After prayer meeting the church went into special conference with Bro Hackney our pastor acting as moderator.

A motion to accept the recommendation of the Board of Deacons to License Bro Ivey Johnson. Moved and seconded and was unanimously ordered.

A motion to have an every member canvass was unanimously carried.

A motion to ask aid from the Board of Missions was unanimously ordered.

A motion to have our clerk write each delinquent member a letter asking for he support both spiritual and financial was unanimously ordered.

A motion to have our services on the first Sunday at 11 and 730 and second and fourth at 730. So ordered.

A motion to have the Lords Supper on the first in each quarter. So Ordered.

A motion to accept the wine given by Bro Hall and Bro Phillips was so ordered.

A motion to accept the buildings belonging to the pastorium from Bro Hackney as he paid Bro Lennon for same $25.00.

A motion to appoint the following as a canvassing committee - G. L. Murray, G. T. Fawcette, Sam Lineberry. So ordered

Sept 20, 1925

The pastor preached today and after preaching the following were received for Baptism - Julius Dickerson.

At 3 oclock we met at the river and Baptized the following - Mrs Geo Hackney, Mr Julius Dickerson.


 

Oct 1, 1925

After prayer meeting pastor Hackney called the church into annual conference. After hearing the letter to the association read by the clerk, it was moved and seconded and ordered adopted.

The election of church officers was as following:

Clerk - C. F. Phillips, Treas - W. O. Murray, Supt - J. R. Allen, asst - A. B. Hall, Cradle Roll supt - Perlie Pennington.

The Board of Trustees was relected, namely J. J. Murray, G. L. Murray, A. B. Hall, G. L. Fonville, Sam Lineberry.

Bro Carl Allen & Chas Murray ask for there names to be withdrawn. It was moved and seconded and carried we withdraw fellowhip from them at their request.

Moved and seconded and carried we value the pastors home at $4,000.00.

No further business. Moved & second we adjourn. Was so ordered. The pastor offered the [board/bread?].

Oct 11, 1925

After B. Y. P. U. meeting tonight of which we had a very good meeting especially the discussion period. After hearing the clerk read the letter to the association, it was moved and second and unanimously carried that we adopt same.

The pastor preached to a very good audaunce tonight. Subject: Lost Opportunities.


 

Oct 18, 1925

The pastor preached at 11 oclock today and at 3 oclock at Deep Creek at this hour he opened the doores of Glencoe Baptist Church and the following was received for Baptism - Sister Maydell Bayleff, and the following were Baptized - Sister Delia Evans who was received Oct 4, 1925, Sister Maggie Evans and Maydell Bayleff. The pastor preached tonight at 730.

Oct 19, 1925

Meeting of the Board of decons at the pastors home.

Moved and second and ordered we recommend to the church that our missions budget be $75.00.

Moved seconded and ordered we recommend to raise our pastors salary from $20.00 per month to $34.00 and that we pay on Monday after first and third Sundays and that he preach first and third Sundays at 11 and 730.

Moved second we have a revival meeting to begin the first Sunday in Nov. and that our pastor do the preaching also that we invite Bro Turner to help us in the singing.

Moved seconed and ordered we get 3 new lamps for the church.

Moved seconed we get Bro Phillips secure a Bulitan Board to place on the church.

Moved and orderd we get some coal.


 

Oct 22, 1925

After prayer meeting the pastor called the church together in special conference. The clerk red the minutes of the Board of Deacons meeting held on Oct 19 and it was moved seconed and voted unanimously carrried to accept all their recommenations.

Dec 9, 1925

The Board of Decons met at Bro J. R. Allens home the meeting was call to order by the pastor by calling on Bro G. T. Fawcette to lead us in prayer.

After hearing a motion to grant Bro G. L. Murray Licenes to preach it was unanimously carried to recommend same to the church.

A motion to withdraw fellowship from Sister Nellie Ivey was unanimously carried.

Motion to withdraw fellowship from Bro Fenly Murray was unanimously carried.

Motion to withdraw fellowship from Sister Eula Minor, the motion was carried.

Motion to withdraw from Bro Cecil Murray was ordered.

Motion to withdraw from Bro William Payne was ordered.

Motion to withdraw from Lacy Marshall so ordered.

Motion to withdraw from Sister Ella Trull, motion was carried.

Motion to withdraw from Bro H. C. Wilson was carried.

Motion to withdraw from Bro Jefferson Davis was carried.

Motion to pay Duplex Co for envelopes was carried.

No further business a motion to adjourn was made and was unanimously carried.

Dec 14, 1925

After prayer meeting tonight the church was called together in special conference by the pastor. The clerk was asked to read the minutes of last meeting.

Moved and seconed and also unanimously carried that we the church grant Bro. G. L. Murray license to preach the Gospel of Christ.

Moved and seconed and also carried that we withdraw fellowship from the following names - Miss Nellie Ivey, Fenly Murray, Eula Minor, Cecil Murray, William Payne, Lacy Murray, Ella Trull, H. C. Wilson, Jefferson Davis.

Motion to pay for envelopes was ordered payed.

After singing a song #203 the meeting closed by the pastor.
