Historic District

E. M. Holt & Sons built Glencoe Cotton Mills and the surrounding village on the east bank of the Haw River, about three miles north of Burlington in Alamance County, between 1880 and 1882. Although there was, at the time, a move from water power to steam power for mills, Glencoe was the last of the mills in Alamance County built for water power. Since the power available from the Haw River could not support a number of mills in one location, mill owners were forced to build mills on isolated sites, far apart, and thus also arose the need to build entire villages to attract, house, and support the mill workers and their families. Glencoe Mills operated continuously until it closed in 1954. It was listed on the National Register as a Historic District on February 2, 1979.
